Ok, so thinking I might want a smart car. In Philadelphia. Partner says she wants a herd, where is the best place to look for an inexpensive one. Also, can you import an Aston Martin Cygnet? Paging Miss Mercedes.

Just get an iQ and look for
an Aston grille from eBay :p

The Cygnet is a Scion/Toyota iQ under the skin, not a Smart. Wouldn’t be worth it cost-wise to import.

Forgot it was a Toyota! I know it's not worth it, but it's also hilarious

But the fancy interior! And RHD.

If you really want to import a Cygnet, call up J K Technologies and bring them a giant pile of cash. They did the Smart cars before Mercedes could be bothered to bring them here, and they did a few Brabus Smart Cars.

I support the Cygnet move, if only because it is one of the more ridiculous things in existence. (though from a cost perspective, buying a used IQ and plastering the AM badges on it does make more sense..

Here’s one for 26k pounds (roughly 32k US). Serious
question, since itis a Toyota IQ underneath, would it be exempt from the 25 year rule?

Depends on if there’s any safety equipment or structural changes from market to market, also whether it meets emissions and if the ECU is compatible with US diagnostic equipment. You’d have to get a letter from Toyota or Aston Martin certifying that it meets US standards.

Best place to get a cheap smart is rural America and cities in which there are TONS of them. So avoid cities like Chicago where they didn’t sell the hottest.
The Cygnet is just an iQ in drag. IIRC, it’s possible to convert the exterior of a normal iQ to look like a Cygnet, but if you want the whole package it’s going to cost you.

Don’t think so... although what it says “on the build tag” probably rules the day. I’d probably down-convert it to an iQ before it went on the boat and put the cosmetics back on over here.
Emissions compliance will be the deal breaker though, without a clear paper trail to compliance.

This is true! Could also import a Suzuki Twin in several more years from Japan? :P
They had a manual as an option!

The powertrain’s emissions compliance is likely the issue.

Yeah, that’s what you’d have to start with...

But then you would have an actual Aston Martin Cygnet and would have to prove you made it and didn’t import it. . .
